about 34
34
34 is a number that has been my families favorite number for years. My parents both went to Auburn University and the greatest football player, Bo Jackson, wore the number 34. My two brothers and I spent our childhood years cheering him on and eventually wearing the number 34 on our own jerseys.
My oldest brother, Sean Henderson, loved basketball and his number was always 34.
When Sean was seventeen years old he underwent his first aortic valve replacement surgery and quickly recovered with the goal to get back on the court for his senior year of basketball wearing number 34.
He played his heart out on the court his senior year and lived fully every moment he had.
After a routine check-up, just two years after his first surgery his heart was failing again and he was scheduled for another aortic valve replacement in 1997. The day of his second open heart surgery he passed away during the surgery.
His basketball jersey, number 34, was retired in 1998 at Southside High School in our small town in AL. His jersey still remains on the wall in the same basketball gym where he loved to play the game of basketball.
This is a space to honor Sean by sharing about life, love, suffering, grief and hope through a lens with an eternal perspective. I hope you enjoy your time here and as you read, you feel less alone, you feel seen, you feel heard and most importantly you feel loved.
